Fort Myer on Land Once Owned by Robert E Lee
This land was originally owned by Robert E. Lee and his wife, Mary Anna Randolph, granddaughter of George Washington Parke Custis who was the grandson of Martha Washington. Lee left the area in 1861 to lead the Confederate Army and never returned. When the Lees were unable to pay their taxes, the land was confiscated by the government for military purposes.
Fort Myer Previously Named Fort Whipple
